WINTER DRIVING · WHITEOUT GUIDE
What to Do During a Hokkaido Whiteout
Blowing snow can make the road, roadside and vehicles ahead difficult or impossible to see. The best response starts before you drive: check current information, keep your schedule flexible and do not treat a planned itinerary as more important than the conditions.
Before leaving
Check the weather and current road information for the whole route, not only your starting point. Hokkaido Government advises travelers to allow extra time, aim to arrive while it is still light and consider changing departure time or using public transport when heavy snow or poor visibility is expected.
If visibility begins to deteriorate
Reduce speed smoothly and increase following distance. Avoid sudden steering or braking. Do not continue at normal speed simply because navigation still shows the road ahead. Blowing snow and drifting snow can change visibility quickly.
If the forecast is severe, change the plan
Official winter-driving guidance for foreign visitors warns that weather can change suddenly and that some areas may have poor mobile reception. If bad weather is forecast, postponing or cancelling a drive can be safer than trying to preserve a fixed itinerary.
Check road restrictions
Roads can be restricted or closed because of weather and other hazards. Use current official road information and obey closures and on-site instructions. Never treat a map app's suggested route as confirmation that a winter road is open or safe.
Prepare for an unexpected stop
Carry warm clothing and basic winter emergency equipment. Hokkaido winter-driving guidance recommends preparing items such as a shovel, jumper cables and tow rope. A charged phone is useful, but do not assume mobile coverage will always be available.
